Developer seeks full-scale casinos in Florida

A developer has spent more than $850,000 on a campaign to legalize full-scale casinos in south Florida.

The Committee for Critical Challenges is gathering signatures to put two amendments on an upcoming ballot. The gaming amendment would require 60 percent of the vote while the tax-related amendment would require 66 percent.

Voters in south Florida legalized slot machines in 2004, a move that led to a Class III gaming compact for the Seminole Tribe The compact was invalidated by the Florida Supreme Court and the state is seeking to have the tribe's Class III games shut down.
