Editorial: Quechan Nation commits to future

"While the debate goes on over a proposed events center in Yuma, progress is being made on a major step forward for the area's entertainment scene.

The Quechan Tribe announced last week that its new resort, casino and entertainment center northwest of Yuma is well past the halfway point in completion of construction with a target opening date of mid-2009.

This is no small project. It is estimated it will cost the tribe upwards of $200 million to build the facility, which could be expanded even more in the future.

The intention is that the resort complex, located at the intersection of Algodones Road and Interstate 8, will be a regional recreational and entertainment attraction when it opens, drawing local visitors and people from Mexico and Imperial County, as well as travelers on Interstate 8."
