Jamul Band sues state over road to new casino

The Jamul Band of Kumeyaay Indians is suing the California Department of Transportation in federal court over roadwork to the tribe's proposed casino.

The tribe plans to widen a road and add a traffic light on a highway leading to the gaming site. But CalTrans won't approve the project without a detailed study of how the casino will affect traffic.

The tribe is asking the court to block CalTrans from enforcing state laws on the reservation. A county official called the tribe's plans "dangerous and unconscionable," The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

The tribe is building a Class II facility on its reservation. Lakes Entertainment says it can't secure funding for the casino without the roadwork.
