Eastern Cherokee casino sees drop in visitors

The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians has seen a 15 percent drop in visits to its North Carolina casino.

Figures haven't been reported but they could spell bad times for the tribe amid a $633 million expansion of the Harrah's Cherokee Casino. Per capita payments could suffer as a result.

“It is this next quarter that is going to be telling,” Joyce Dugan, the casino's director of external relations, told The Asheville Citizen-Times. “We just don't know. No one knows from day to day what the market is going to be.”

The expansion is expected to create 1,000 new jobs by the time it's finished in 2012.
