Seneca Nation won't seek exception for casino

TheSeneca Nation of New York won't seek an exception for its proposed off-reservation casino in the Catskills, President Barry E. Snyder Sr. said.

The tribe has used the land claim exception in Section 20 of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act to open two off-reservation casinos. One of those facilities is the subject of litigation.

For the Catskills proposal, Snyder said the tribe won't follow the same path. That apparently means the tribe will go through the two-part determination process, which requires state and federal approval.

The tribe is working with a Michigan group on the project. But officials in the Catskills, who have been open to tribal gaming, said they were surprised by the announcement.
