Mohegan Tribe pushes full casino in Massachusetts

The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut wants to open a full-scale casino resort in Massachusetts, not a slot machine parlor, a top gaming executive said.

The tribe began eyeing a casino in Massachusetts after Gov. Deval Patrick (D) proposed legislation to authorize three commercial gaming facilities. The state is now pushing for slot parlors.

But Mitchell Etess, the chief executive of Mohegan Sun, said that's not the way to go. “We want to build a resort-style casino in western Massachusetts because we believe the overall economics of the commonwealth are enhanced by a full facility rather than a slot parlor,” he told The Boston Herald.

The tribe operates a race track with slot machines in Pennsylvania. The facility appears to be doing well.
