First Nation seeks bigger share of casino profits
Wednesday, September 9, 2009

ontario
The Rama Mnjikaning First Nation of Ontario is in court to seek a bigger share of revenues from Casino Rama.

The band says it is entitled to 35 percent of net profits. That would cut into the share of revenues that go to The Chiefs of Ontario, which represents all 134 First Nations in the province.

A judge ruled against the Mnjikaning First Nation. The case before the Ontario Court of Appeal is apparently centering on the trial conduct of Justice Arthur Gans, whose courtroom remarks in various cases have landed him in trouble.

The band is also suing the province over a 20 percent tax on gross casino revenues.
