Tribes consider casino employee illness policy

The American Indian Health Commission for Washington State is urging tribes to reconsider employee attendance policies in light of concerns about H1N1 virus, commonly known as swine flu.

Most tribes require casino employees to come to work on busy days even if they are sick, according to commission chair Marilyn Scott. The policy could hamper efforts to limit the spread of the flu.

“Employees need to feel safe that they won’t lose their jobs if they are sick," Scott, who also serves as chair of the Upper Skagit Tribe, told The Tacoma News-Tribune.

Gaming employees of the Puyallup Tribe who call in sick four times during busy days are subject to termination. The tribe is rethinking the policy.
