Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe seeks Class III compact

The new leader of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe will ask Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick (D) to negotiate a Class III gaming compact.

Chairman Cedric Cromwell, who was elected last Sunday, hopes to meet the governor in a few weeks. "I want to meet with the governor and shake his hand and let him know that there is a new administration in town that's transparent and full of integrity," he told The Cape Cod Times.

Patrick supports legislation to authorize three commercial casinos. He has publicly urged the tribe to seek a license should the bill become law.

The tribe is waiting for an answer on its land-into-trust application for a casino in the town of Middleboro.
