City opinion backs Burt Lake Band casino bid

The Burt Lake Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians can pursue a casino under state law, according to an opinion from the attorney for the city of Sturgis, Michigan.

The tribe's lack of federal recognition means the issue can be handled in-state, attorney Roger Bird said. “In reality, this will need to be resolved in Lansing,” Bird told city commissioners, The Sturgis Journal reported. “It will still require an act of legislation.”

The tribe wants to build a $150 million casino and commercial development in the city.
