Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe defends casino site

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts its committed to its casino site, vice chairman Aaron Tobey said.

The tribe filed a land-into-trust application to build a casino in the town of Middleboro, about 40 miles from tribal headquarters. The tribe cites modern and historical connections to the site.

A historian hired by the town of Halifax claims otherwise. James Lynch, who was paid $5,000, wrote a study that said the Mashpees have no ties to Middleboro.

"I think he researches and writes to a predetermined conclusion," Dennis Whittlesey, an attorney for Middleboro, told The Boston Globe.

The town of Middleboro supports the casino.
