Judge orders Tigua Tribe to stop offering games

A federal judge in Texas ordered the Tigua Tribe to stop offering electronic gaming machines and sweepstakes games at its casino in El Paso.

The electronic machines at the Speaking Rock Casino reward players with Visa gift cards of up to $20. Judge Harry Hudspeth ruled that the games violate a 2001 court order that limits the tribe to $5 amusement-style games.

The casino used to offer Class II games until the state went to federal court and had them shut down. Efforts to change state law to authorize gaming on reservations have failed in recent years.
