Morongo Band leading push for Internet poker

The Morongo Band of Mission Indians has teamed up with non-Indian card clubs to push for the legalization of Internet poker in California.

The tribe and the card clubs are lobbying lawmakers in hopes of getting a bill passed this year. They are touting the potential revenue stream from online games.

"You've got a huge amount of gambling going on on the Internet right now that is a large measure unregulated," tribal attorney George Forman told The Sacramento Bee. Huge amounts of money are being wagered. The state is not getting any of that. Money is going offshore."

The Morongo Band has invited other tribes to join the effort, the Bee reported.
