Editorial: Start working with Shinnecock Nation

"More than three decades after the Shinnecock Indian Nation applied for federal recognition, there's every reason to believe that the finish line is months - not years - away. So it's time for Albany to deal seriously with the tribe about reasonable casino locations.

If the state doesn't talk to the Shinnecocks about places that make some sense, such as Belmont Park in Elmont or spots in Suffolk, the tribe could decide to do what it won't need any further approvals to do: Build a casino in Hampton Bays. That site would mean a walking-distance trip to work for many in the tribe, but it would be a commuting nightmare for everyone else. Traffic congestion in that area is already unbearable. A casino there could create terminal gridlock.

To their credit, tribal leaders understand that Hampton Bays would be a problem, and they are willing to discuss other options. Belmont is one, and a legislative task force is in the early stages of identifying possible Suffolk sites.

But Gov. David A. Paterson's office ought to begin talking with Shinnecock leaders now. If he waits until federal recognition is formally granted, there's a chance that, after waiting many years for a revenue stream, some in the tribe might decide to move precipitously. They could build a casino and install video lottery terminals in Hampton Bays very soon after they get recognition."
