Shingle Springs Band battles suit by former gaming partner

The Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians will have to go to court to defend itself against a lawsuit by a former gaming partner.

The tribe claimed sovereign immunity from the lawsuit by Sharp Image Gaming Inc. But the state courts have said the case can proceed.

At issue is the tribe's contract with Sharp Image. The parties worked together on the Crystal Mountain Casino, which closed on opening day due to local opposition.

Sharp Image claims it is owed $7 million for financing the project and $100 million for damages.

The tribe subsequently opened the Red Hawk Casino with Lakes Entertainment as its partner.
