Iowa backs casino opposed by Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe

The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission voted 5-0 to approve a casino near the South Dakota border.

The $120 million facility in Lyon County would draw gamblers from the Sioux Falls, South Dakota, area. That's the same market the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe relies on for the Royal River Casino.

The tribe opposed the Iowa casino and has proposed an off-reservation casino near Sioux Falls as a counter-measure. The project would need state and federal approval.

The Lyon County casino was the only one approved yesterday. The board rejected one in Tama County that was opposed by the Meskwaki Tribe.
