Little Traverse Bay Bands accuses Bay Mills of violating compact

The Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians says a new casino opened by the Bay Mills Indian Community violates the Class III gaming compact.

Little Traverse Chairman Ken Harrington said Bay Mills hasn't followed proper procedures. As long as it stays open, the state won't receive a share of Little Traverse gaming revenues, he said.

“It’s not meant to exclude them, but they do have to comply with the proper procedures to open a casino," Harrington told The Petoskey News-Review. "They (Bay Mills) haven’t done that.”

The Bay Mills Indian Community opened the casino on a 45-acre site in Vanderbilt on November 3. The land apparently hasn't been placed in trust

The tribe says the casino is legal because the site was purchased through a land claim settlement.
