Arizona lawmaker wants tribes to keep casinos on reservation

An Arizona lawmaker says tribes shouldn't be allowed to open casinos away from existing reservations.

Rep. Jack Harper (R) says the Class III gaming compact that tribes signed after the passage of Proposition 202 limits casinos to reservations that existed at that time. He introduced a bill to allow cities to open their own casinos as a threat to tribes.

"I think the threat of competition is necessary to keep them from violating their agreement from 2002," Harper told The Arizona Capital Times.

As he expected, Harper's bill was killed by the House Government Committee.
