Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe ready to enter gaming market

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe is prepared to offer Class II gaming if legislation for full-scale gaming doesn't pass in Massachusetts.

Chairman Cedric Cromwell testified before the Joint Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies yesterday. He said the tribe wants to negotiate a Class III compact with the state but that depends on lawmakers, who have failed to pass a casino bill since 2007.

Class II gaming is already legal in the state so the tribe could offer bingo and electronic forms of bingo. The tribe, however, doesn't have any land in trust.

The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut also testified at the hearing. The tribe hopes to win a commercial license for a gaming facility in western Massachusetts.
