Habematolel Pomo awaits BIA approval of Class III compact

The Habematolel Pomo of Upper Lake is waiting on the Bureau of Indian Affairs to approve its new Class III gaming compact.

The tribe negotiated the deal after the BIA rejected an earlier version. The new compact has been ratified by the California Legislature and signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown (D).

"With the governor’s signature, the only remaining hurdle is to get final approval from the U.S. Department of the Interior, with which the tribe has already worked out an agreement," Assemblyman Wes Chesbro (D) told The Lake County News.

The compact authorizes up to 750 slot machines. Revenue sharing provisions only take effect if the tribe offers more than 600 machines.
