Mescalero Apache Nation hails off-reservation gaming denial

The Obama administration made the "right decision" to reject an off-reservation casino for Jemez Pueblo, the leader of the Mescalero Apache Nation said.

Jemez Pueblo wants to build a casino in southern New Mexico, not far from the Mescalero Apache Reservation. But the Bureau of Indian Affairs rejected the plan, citing distance and jurisdictional concerns.

"The decision follows both the spirit and the letter of the law," Mescalero Apache President Mark Chino told The Ruidoso News.

Jemez Pueblo is weighing its appeal options.
