Passamaquoddy Chief: 'It is our turn' for gaming in Maine

Leaders of the Passamaquoddy Tribe of Maine say their people deserve a shot at gaming.

Tribal leaders have gone to the ballot or the Legislature four times in recent years. Their plans have always been rejected even as voters approved non-Indian gaming facilities.

"Now it is our turn,” Joe Socobasin, the chief of the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Indian Township, said at a press conference, The Bangor Daily News reported.

Question 2 appears on the November 8 ballot. If approved, the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Pleasant Point and the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Indian Township will operate 600 slot machines at a racetrack in Washington County.

The Putting Maine To Work initiative also includes a racino in city of Biddeford with 1,400 slot machines.
