Tohono O'odham Nation defends bid for off-reservation casino

Chairman Ned Norris Jr. of the Tohono O'odham Nation presented the tribe's off-reservation casino to the Peoria Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday.

Norris slammed critics of the West Valley Resort for trying to change a land claim settlement that allowed the tribe to purchase 135 acres near Glendale. "If we're violating the law, why is the opposition now moving to change the law?" he said, The Arizona Republic reported.

Last month, the House Natural Resources Committee approved H.R.2938. If enacted, the bill will bar the tribe from using its land for Class II or Class III gaming.

The Obama administration opposes the bill.
