Tribal colleges in Oklahoma benefit from gaming revenues

Tribal colleges in Oklahoma are benefiting from the state's booming Indian gaming industry.

The College of the Muscogee Nation received nearly all of the funding for a $7.5 million building from the Muscogee Nation. "Their gaming revenue goes into an account, and from that they fund us," college president Robert Bible told Diverse Issues in Higher Education.

"Indian gaming has proven to be a very good thing for all students in Oklahoma, but particularly tribal college students,” Bible said.

Under the Class III gaming compact, tribes share a portion of their revenues with the state. Some of that money goes to public schools but tribal colleges aren't specifically included.
