Fort Sill Apache Tribe not giving up New Mexico casino plan

The Fort Sill Apache Tribe of Oklahoma hasn't given up on plans to open a casino in southern New Mexico, its ancestral territory.

The tribe owns 30 acres in between Deming and Las Cruces. The land is held in trust but the federal government has said it can't be used for gaming for now.

That could change if the Bureau of Indian Affairs issues a reservation proclamation for the land. But a decision has been pending for more than four years.

"The ultimate goal is to return the tribe to its homeland," Chairman Jeff Haozous told The Las Cruces Sun-News.
