Off-reservation gaming heats up again for Wisconsin tribes

At least three Wisconsin tribes are trying to open off-reservation casinos.

The Menominee Nation has been working on its plan to convert an old racetrack in Kenosha into a casino for several years. The Bush administration rejected the project but the Obama administration agreed to reconsider it.

“We feel that we have a chance,” attorney Rory Dilweg told The BizTimes. “Under the Bush administration, they had made up their mind that they didn’t want to deal with these things. They either sat on them or denied them. Now we feel like we have a fighting chance.”

The Sokaogon Chippewa Community is also looking off-reservation. The tribe wants to convert the Blue Harbor Resort in Sheboygan into a casino.

The Ho-Chunk Nation is getting into the game too. Plans call for a casino in Beloit, where two other tribes were rejected by the Bush administration.

Finally, the Forest County Potawatomi Tribe is said to be interested in building a hotel at its existing off-reservation casino in Milwaukee.
