Editorial: Don't be fooled by push for casinos in Michigan

"Two groups are seeking to qualify ballot measures for the November election that could authorize a combined 15 new casinos in Michigan, adding to the 25 already in place here. We’re not going to try to convince anyone to sign or not sign the petitions that will be circulated to get the proposals on the ballot, but we do hope voters don’t fall for the argument that casinos represent “economic development” for Michigan.

If you feel casinos are a harmless and refreshing form of entertainment and you want more choices, by all means sign your name when the petition-gatherers approach you. If free-market principles lead you to believe that Native American tribes and a few favored Detroit casino operators shouldn’t have a monopoly on the business, that’s another good reason to sign."
