Editorial: Weigh impact of $246M Poarch Creek casino expansion

"The Poarch Band of Creek Indians is clearly confident — $246 million worth of confident — that it will prevail in any legal dispute over its federal recognition as a tribe and the legality of its gambling operations. Otherwise, it would hardly proceed with the kind of expenditure it has announced for its Wetumpka casino location.

If the massive project creating Wind Creek Wetumpka moves forward — and there seems little reason to think it won’t — it will have a tremendous impact on Wetumpka and the surrounding area, but particularly on Wetumpka. City residents and their leaders should consider the scale of this effect with eyes open not only to the benefits, but also to the full range of the impact on a city of 7,800."
