Shakopee Tribe spreads gaming revenue across Indian Country

Thanks to gaming revenues, the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community in Minnesota is the most generous in Indian Country.

Since 1996, the tribe has donated $243.5 million to tribes and lent another $478.5 million to tribes. “We feel we have an obligation to help others. It’s part of our culture," President Stanley R. Crooks told The New York Times.

The generosity extends to the local community. In 2010 alone, the tribe donated $28.5 million to non-profits and organizations, more than other Fortune 500 companies in the Twin Cities area.

The tribe also distributes per capita payments to its members. Each receives a total of $1.08 million a year, the Times reported.
