New York town eyes Stockbridge-Munsee off-reservation casino

The town of Thompson, New York, supports an off-reservation casino for the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians, Mid-Hudson News Network reports.

Supervisor Anthony Cellini wrote the Bureau of Indian Affairs to support the tribe's land-into-trust application. The project has been in the works since at least 2001.

“I cannot think of a project that has been before our town that has undertaken to review the environmental impacts as thoroughly and as comprehensively as the Stockbridge,” Cellini wrote in the letter, Mid-Hudson News Network reported.

The BIA has started the environmental review process on the application. The tribe wants 330 acres in trust.

The tribe's ancestors lived in New York before being removed to Wisconsin.
