New Mexico asks tribes for share of 'free play' at their casinos

The state of New Mexico wants a cut of “free play” or “bonus point” bets at tribal casinos, The Albuquerque Journal reports.

Under the Class III gaming compact, tribes share a percentage of revenues with the state. But the New Mexico Gaming Control Board says some tribes are failing to report free play credits -- a loss put at $13 million to $20 million a year.

Ten tribes are in discussions about the issue, the Journal reported. They say free play credits don't meet the definition of a "wager" in the compact.

In 2011, tribes shared $65.2 million with the state.
