Massachusetts Gaming Commission to consider tribal option

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe remains confident of its casino plans even as gaming regulators consider another option for southeastern Massachusetts.

H.3702, the state's gaming law, authorizes three casinos in three regions. Region C is supposed to be for "a federally recognized tribe."

The Mashpees have been hit with setbacks that could hurt its chances so the Massachusetts Gaming Commission is considering whether to open the region to non-Indian bidders. A public hearing on March 21 could lead to a decision on the matter.

“We welcome the Gaming Commission coming to southeastern Massachusetts, and we are confident that they will recognize that there is no reason or basis under the Expanded Gaming Act to seek applications for a commercial casino in this region,” Mashpee Chairman Cedric Cromwell said in a statement to The Taunton Gazette.
