Spokane Tribe won't object to delay in BIA's review of casino

The Spokane Tribe of Washington won't object to a short delay in the review process for its off-reservation casino.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs issued the final environmental impact statement for the West Plains Mixed-Use Development on February 1. The comment period closes this week but Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Washington) has asked for a 45-day extension.

Spokane Chairman Rudy Peone said the tribe won't oppose the request, as long as it's the only one. He said local officials should have plenty of time to comment on the proposed casino.

If the BIA approves the project, the Gov. Jay Inslee (D) will be able to veto it under the two-part determination provisions of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. He hasn't stated his position on the casino.
