Connecticut tribes draw fewer gamblers from Massachusetts

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut are drawing fewer gamblers from Massachusetts, according to a new report.

The Connecticut tribes have long depended on patrons from Massachusetts, the most populous New England state. But with gambling options expanding throughout the region, fewer people are going to Foxwoods Resort Casino and Mohegan Sun, the report said.

"In 2012, approximately 1.7 million residents from the five states surveyed visited Foxwoods and approximately 1.6 million residents visited Mohegan Sun. However, the estimated number of visitors to Foxwoods declined by 22% from 2008 to 2012, while the number of visitors to Mohegan Sun also declined by 22% over this period," the report stated. "The number of visitors over the past 2 years (2010 to 2012) declined by 10% at Foxwoods and 7% at Mohegan Sun."

"Significantly, Massachusetts residents account for two-thirds (66%) of the decline in the number of visitors to Foxwoods from 2008 to 2012 and 28% of the decline in visitors at Mohegan Sun," the report added.

The report said Twin River, a non-Indian facility in Rhode Island, is drawing more Massachusetts gamblers.
