Tribes still in the running for casino in western Massachusetts

Competition for a commercial casino in western Massachusetts is down to three proposals, including two from tribal enterprises.

The western region initially drew four interested groups: the Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut; Hard Rock International, which is owned by the Seminole Tribe of Florida; MGM Resorts; and Penn National Gaming.

But Penn National has been knocked out of the running by Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. He said his city will only vote on the casino bid from MGM Resorts.

The Mohegans are looking at a casino in Palmer, a nearby town. Hard Rock is interested in a site in West Springfield, a different city.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission expects to make a decision on the license in early 2014.
