Cayuga Nation objects to Oneida Nation gaming exclusivity

The Cayuga Nation is objecting to a gaming agreement between Oneida Nation and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D).

Cuomo promised the Oneida Nation a 10-county region of exclusivity. The Cayuga Nation's land base falls within that region.

"The Governor’s proposed grant of exclusivity to the Oneida's Nation regarding lands within the Cayuga Nation’s reservation will not and cannot stand under established federal law and long-standing treaty rights," Cayuga Nation Representative Clint Halftown said in a press release.

The Cayuga Nation sent letters to Cuomo and to Interior Secretary Sally Jewell outlining the tribe's concerns with the deal, which has not been finalized. Any compact with the Oneida Nation will have to be reviewed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
