Narragansett Tribe upset with expansion of non-Indian casino

The Narragansett Tribe has faced opposition to its gaming plans even as non-Indian options expand in the state.

Voters and politicians in the state have repeatedly rejected casinos for the tribe. Meanwhile, the Twin River Casino added table games on Wednesday with the support of Gov. Lincoln Chafee (D) and other officials.

"I'm truly disgusted with how things have evolved that allows Twin River to have table games. It appears that the only way gaming was going to expand in Rhode Island was for the Narragansett Indian Tribe to not be involved with the proposal," council member Randy Noka said in a statement to the Associated Press.

The tribe is barred from following the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act due to an appropriations rider. The rider was written after a federal court had ruled in favor of the tribe's gaming rights.
