Judge considers arguments over Oneida Nation casino zone

A federal judge will hold a hearing next month in a gaming dispute involving the Oneida Nation, the Cayuga Nation and the state of New York.

The Oneida Nation and Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) reached an agreement in which the tribe agreed to share revenues from its Class III facility in exchange for a zone of exclusivity. The Cayuga Nation objects to the deal because its property lies within the zone.

The state, however, says nothing in the agreement prevents the Cayuga Nation from seeking to negotiate its own Class III gaming compact for a casino in the same zone. The state is calling on Judge Lawrence E. Kahn to reject the tribe's motion to intervene in a lawsuit that affects the Oneida Nation's land-into-trust application.

Arguments on the motion will be held August 8, The Auburn Citizen reported.

Turtle Talk has posted documents from the case, New York v. Jewell.
