San Carlos Apache Tribe leader sued for casino-related death

A leader of the San Carlos Apache Tribe of Arizona is being sued for a casino-related death.

The lawsuit claims council member Tao Etpison gave alcohol drinks to Justin Hooke, a fellow tribal member, at the Apache Gold Casino Resort in April 2011. Hooke died after trying to drive home. He was 22 years old.

“Justin had a limitless future which served as a point of pride and inspiration to tribal members of the San Carlos Apache Tribe,” Peter Gorski, an attorney for Hooke's family, said in a tribal court filing, The Payson Roundup reported.

The tribe, the tribal council and the tribal gaming enterprise all have claimed sovereign immunity. They are arguing that Hooke's family were not patrons of the casino.
