Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe won't give up dreams for casino

The Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe still wants to open a casino in Massachusetts, Chairwoman Cheryl Andrews-Maltais said.

The tribe has been limited by a land claim settlement that places the reservation under state law. But Andrews-Maltais said the tribe won't give up hope.

“We're evaluating all options that are available to us,” Andrews-Maltais told The Cape Cod Times. “Right now the land that's in trust is here in Aquinnah, but we're going to continue to emphasize all options that are available to us."

The tribe was seeking to join a lawsuit that challenges the tribal provisions in of H.3702, the Massachusetts Expanded Gaming Act. But the tribe has dropped its effort because Andrews-Maltais believes the state will eventually prevail.
