Last week, the Associated Press reported that Alabama will soon have a 20-story casino and hotel in Wetumpka, the largest in the state just above its 17-story sister casino in Atmore. The news comes a week after a Houston County circuit judge ruled that confiscated electronic devices used to play bingo at Country Crossing in south Houston County are slot machines that violate the Alabama constitution’s prohibition on gambling. The timing underscores the strange dichotomy of gambling in Alabama. Country Crossing was built by private developers. The Wind Creek casinos in Wetumpka and Atmore are owned by the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, and are not subject to state laws on gambling – at least not in the same way non-tribal facilities are – although the games are the same.Get the Story:
