Maine tribes seek inclusion in bill to study expansion of gaming

Lawmakers who represent Maine tribes are seeking inclusion in a bill to study the expansion of gaming in the state.

LD 1856 calls on the state to hire an “experienced gaming consulting firm” to study expansion options. But the bill makes no mention of tribes at this point.

“By mentioning the tribes, we ensure our perspective is included,” Rep. Henry John Bear, who represents the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, told The Bangor Daily News.

The Maine House approved gaming bills that would have helped the Houlton Band and other tribes. But the Senate killed the measures.
