The National Indian Gaming Association bestowed the Wendell A. Chino Humanitarian Award to Marshall McKay, the chairman of the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation of California.

McKay was selected for his lifelong commitment to protecting tribal sovereignty and for his service to tribes in California. He received the award at NIGA's annual convention, which was held in San Diego this week.

"Marshall McKay has fought the fight for Indian country on so many different occasions. And to this day, there are still challenges and it is people like Marshall McKay that will keep us united,” NIGA Chairman Ernie Stevens Jr. said on Tuesday night.

The award is named for the late Wendell Chino, a former chairman of the Mescalero Apache Nation of New Mexico.
