The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians is hosting the North Carolina Republican Party at its casino this weekend.

Top Republicans will be at the Harrah's Cherokee Casino Resort from Friday through Sunday for the party's annual convention. This is the first time that the event has been held in Indian Country.

"We are honored that the North Carolina Republican Party chose to bring the convention to our homeland and to our facility," Chief Michell Hicks said in a press release. "We host a number of large groups every year and are always happy to share our home and our culture with visitors who would like to learn more about the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians."

The tribe is a major contributor to the economy in western North Carolina. The casino employs more than 2,500 people.

Another casino is under construction and will generate more than 900 jobs.
