About 600 employees at the casino owned by the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria in California are voting in a union election this week.

Chairman Greg Sarris welcomed the election. The right to unionize was included in the tribe's Class III gaming compact.

“I’m very happy to see that the agreement I made is now being fulfilled,” Sarris told The Santa Rosa Press-Democrat. “Unions are there to ensure my dream of a more equitable society.”

The Unite Here union wants to represent gambling, maintenance and food and beverage workers at the Graton Resort and Casino.
