The top executive in Oneida County, New York, says a proposed commercial casino would harm the Oneida Nation casino and an existing non-Indian facility.

The tribe and the state agreed to a zone of exclusivity around the Turning Stone Resort Casino in Oneida County. The proposed $425 million Lago Resort & Casino is located just over the edge of the zone in Seneca County.

"One of the major goals in expanding gaming throughout the state was to create new economic opportunity, not to place facilities in such close proximity that they cannibalize one another," Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente Jr. sent a letter Monday to the Gaming Facility Location Board, The Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin reported.

The proposed casino is 77 miles from Turning Stone. Lago expects to draw 30 percent of its business from existing tribal gaming facilities, the paper reported, citing an executive summary that was filed with the New York State Gaming Commission.
