The Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation of North Dakota has begun work on a casino expansion project.

The tribe is adding an events center to the 4 Bears Casino and Lodge in New Town. The 85,000 square-foot area with seating for up to 4,000 people, enables the facility to bring in bigger entertainment acts.

"We apologize for our lapse in national entertainment schedule," the casino's website states. "But stay tuned for more remodeling/expansion news and big entertainment announcements coming in 2016."

The events center is due to open by July 2016. But a new grand ballroom and an expanded gaming floor will debut much sooner -- by the end of this month, KXMC said.

The expansion of the gaming floor includes a slot machine area that will allow smoking. The tribe is installing a state-of-the-art air filtration system, general manager Patrick Packineau told KXMC.

The cost of the expansion was not disclosed.
