A former employee of the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Pottawatomi was sentenced for stealing more than $27,000 from the Michigan tribe's casino hotel.

John Earl Seiler, 59, admitted he took the money from the Quality Inn & Suites at the Fire Keepers Casino. In court papers, he linked his theft on his gambling addiction and the death of his long-time partner.

"Mr. Seiler suffers from a gambling addiction. Almost all of the money he took, he gambled away at the Fire Keepers Casino next door to the Inn," the sentencing memorandum read. "Casino records confirm this spending by him in an amount similar to that stolen."

"Mr. Seiler’s embarrassment for conduct is genuine and deep. The recognition of his conduct caused him to lock himself up in his home alone for two weeks due to the disappointment he felt in himself," the filing stated."

"Mr. Seiler regrets his conduct. He apologizes to the tribe, his co-workers, and this court, as society’s representation at large, for his wrongdoing. He cannot imagine sinking this low again," it concluded.

Seiler was sentenced to three years probation and was ordered to pay 27,600.58 in restitution to the tribe.
