Suspected robber shot and killed at casino owned by White Mountain Apache Tribe

A man who attempted a robbery outside of the casino owned by the White Mountain Apache Tribe was shot and killed by a cash courier, according to news reports.

Buddy E. Martel, 52, allegedly sprayed a chemical irritant on a cash courier who was making a stop in an armored car at the Hon-Dah Resort Casino on Monday, according to the reports. The courier responded by shooting and killing Martel in the parking lot, The White Mountain Independent reported.

No one else was injured and the courier is expected to be fine, ABC15 reported. The incident remains under investigation.

An armed robbery occurred inside the facility in July, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said at the time. An individual got away with an undisclosed amount of money taken from the casino cage, according to the agency.

Martel has lived on the reservation but is described as "White" and "Caucasian" in arrest reports on Instant Checkmate. His prior offenses were not robbery related, according to the listings.
