Delaware becomes first state with sports betting after Supreme Court ruling

Delaware became the first state to offer sports betting in the wake of a landmark decision from the U.S. Supreme Court.

Gov. John Carney (D) placed the first bet on Tuesday: $10 on a professional baseball game. He ended up winning, as the Phillies defeated the Cubs later that night.

Sports betting is available at all three casinos in the state, according to the governor. Officials moved forward after determining that the Supreme Court's decision didn't require them to take further action, because the state already legalized such wagers back in 2009.

The May 14 ruling also opened the door for tribes to engage in sports betting in states where it is legal. The Oneida Nation is poised to become the first to do so on its homelands in New York.

Other tribes are eager to explore the opportunity as more states legalize wagers. Some may need to renegotiate their Class III gaming compacts to account for sports betting.
